The Speedlight V2 wireless system was a natural progression from the widely used, and universally accepted Speedlight Timing System. Whereas the original Speedlight was a wired system, the SpeedlightV2 is an entirely new wireless design.Based on a spread spectrum radio communication system, Swift has developed a propriety network protocol for use across a range of future wireless products. The Speedlight V2 uses this same system for implementation of what is arguably, one of the most versatile systems available today.
Speedlight V2 incorporates dual beam gates, as our research has shown this is fundamental in achieving repeatable and accurate results. Recent research indicates that single beam gates with suitable software filtering, give results also suitable for sprint performance testing. However, the caveat amongst this research recommends that results should not be mixed, between the two systems as differences do exist.
Single beam gates without any filtering should be avoided as huge discrepancies exist in results collected with such systems. Attempts have been made by some designers of single beam systems to implement software algorithms to correct for spurious signals. Some software packages offer the user the option to select their own filtering mnethod. Detection options may include , leading edge, trailing edge, first pulse, last pulse or an average of any of these. The random positional nature of swinging arms and trailing legs means that sometimes, the algorithm may not give the desired result. If the user was using a single beam system, they would need to ensure they always used the same algorithm.
With Speedlight V2 gates, there is no confusion. Thousands upon thousands of athletes have been tested using the tried and proven Speedlight system in Australia and throughout the world. Our adopted policy of using first principals to determine the time of switching is undisputed for its reliability. Consider the implications of gate height, when single beams are in use………Dual beams effectively filter the variance caused by such discrepancies.
